Sheltered scheme celebrates 25 years

A town crier and choir of local schoolchildren joined older residents in Burgess Hill to celebrate 25 years of their sheltered scheme.

Downland Housing Association, which owns and manages 34 apartments at Sheddingdean Court, threw an afternoon tea party to celebrate the scheme’s quarter century on Wednesday (June 6).

Burgess Hill town crier Neil Batsford opened the event before children from Sheddingdean Community Primary School sang for residents and invited guests, including Burgess Hill Town Council chairman Andrew Barrett-Miles.

Among the residents enjoying the party was Sheddingdean’s longest standing resident, 92-year-old Ray Avery, who has lived at the scheme in Packham Way for 22 years.

Ray said: “There is a lovely sense of community at Sheddingdean Court and the party was a great chance to get together and celebrate the 25th year. It is amazing to think that I have been here almost since the beginning.

“I have always enjoyed living at Sheddingdean and look forward to many more happy years.”

A balloon modeller and conjurer bought a touch of magic to the proceedings as residents and guests enjoyed refreshments throughout the afternoon.

Residents at Sheddingdean Court are encouraged to take part in a wide range of social activities. Events include an art group, quilting group, card making sessions and monthly fish and chip suppers.

Scheme manager Jennie Evans said: “I am delighted that we were able to celebrate Sheddingdean Court’s 25th year in such style and with the support of the local community.

“We encourage our residents to lead active lifestyles and the wide range of activities at Sheddingdean Court demonstrates how residents of any age can live life to the full, and maintain their independence.”
