£9,000 Raised in aid of the homeless

Downland Housing Association were once again pleased to sponsor Christian Care Association’s Sleep Out on Thursday 28 October 2004 to raise money for homeless and disadvantaged people in Chichester and Bognor Regis.

This year’s event is on target to raise £9000 for Christian Care Association, who provide homeless support across Chichester and Arun and a night shelter service at St Joseph’s Refuge in Chichester, for homeless and disadvantaged people.

The fundraising event kicked off at 10.30am with a competition for local school children and activity groups to make their own all-weather cardboard shelters.

Miranda Litchfield from Christian Care Association said: “We would like to thank everyone for their support this year. We had a fantastic turnout of approximately 175 sponsored sleepers as well as the background support that makes this event possible”.

Mike Ballard, Director of Supported and Sheltered Housing at Downland Housing Association said: “It was amazing to see so many people taking part, including a high number of teenagers. Teenagers are generally seen in a bad light and here they were raising money for the homeless. A huge thank you goes to them in what has been a very successful event”.

“The event not only raises funds to provide much needed support to people who are homeless, but it is a practical and visible demonstration of the issues involved both to those taking part and those trying to help”.

The winners of the cardboard shelter competition were judged by Canon John Ford from Chichester Cathedral, Mr Francis Casey, Retired Headmaster of Philip Howard school in Barnham and Mrs Mary Coburn, Chief Executive of Downland Housing Association.
