A night under the stars in aid of charity
Downland Housing Association is once again proud to sponsor Christian Care Association’s Sleep Out.
Large numbers of people are expected to take part in Sleep Out 2004 on Thursday 28 October 2004 to raise money for homeless and disadvantaged people in Chichester and Bognor Regis.
The event which is sponsored by Downland Housing Association, is a major fundraising event for the Christian Care Association, which provides homeless support across Chichester and Arun and a provides a night shelter service at St Joseph’s Refuge in Chichester, for homeless and disadvantaged people.
Each sleeper is being sponsored to spend the night in the open air. Previous Sleep Outs have raised thousands of pounds for homeless people in the area.
Among those taking part in Sleep Out 2004 will be fourteen year-old Joe Downey from Chichester. He has raised lots of money for Christian Care Association at the previous two Sleep Outs.
Joe said: ”I enjoyed the previous Sleep Out so much that I am going back again this year with many more friends. I love going in the Sleep Out because it is a unique chance to see the world from a homeless person’s point of view and having to face at least some of the problems that they would go through.”
The fundraising event kicks off at 10.30am with a competition for local school children and activity groups to make their own all-weather cardboard shelters.
Mike Ballard, Head of Supported and Sheltered Housing at Downland Housing Association said: “We are pleased to continue our support for the Chichester Christian Care Association and the Sleep Out in particular”.
“The event not only raises funds to provide much needed support to people who are homeless, but it is a practical and visible demonstration of the issues involved both to those taking part and those trying to help”. Miranda Litchfield from Christian Care Association said: “We are extremely grateful for Downland’s encouragement and look forward to an even better Sleep Out this year”.
Registration for the Sleep Out is at 6pm on 28 October 2004.
Anyone wanting to take part in the Sleep Out should contact Christian Care Association for a sponsorship form, application and details of the cardboard shelter competition on 01243 537934 at St Joseph’s, Hunston Road, Chichester, West Sussex, PO20 1NP.
