Fantastic opportunity for football mad youngsters
Downland Housing Association recently supported the Bentswood Young Pilgrims Football Club’s under 12's first match. The match was held at the Barn Cottage Pavilion in Haywards Heath against Lindfield Juniors with over 300 spectators.
Approximately 100 adults and 200 children came along to give their support to the local teams. For the Young Pilgrims it was their first ever match and to make the day extra special Mid Sussex Police, Downland Housing Association, Bentswood Residents’ Association and the Wilmington Way Residents’ Association Chaired by Jackie Parr, sponsored a new set of kit for each player. Much to the players surprise their new kit was waiting for them in the changing room prior to the match.
All set to play, the Young Pilgrims gave the match their best shot. Unfortunately they lost to Lindfield Juniors 5:0 but none will forget their first match in their new strip. Each player was presented with their medal by Councillor Paddy Henry and Debbie Cummins, Sussex Police Community Support Officer.
The Young Pilgrims football club is run by a dedicated committee of seven, lead by Chairman, Pat Appleby and volunteers, without whose valuable commitment and support to these youngsters they would not have the opportunity to play their favorite sport. Ian Field, Club Secretary not only donated the Silver and Gold Medals but also the “Man of the Match Cup”. Committee Member, Hazel Willard paid for the hire of the Changing Room and the pitch and also provided the players half time refreshments.
Derek Husted, said: “We are very grateful to everyone for their support, without them this would not have been possible. I wish to thank Downland Housing Association, Mid Sussex District Council, Sussex Police and the local community for all their help and look forward to seeing everyone at future matches.”
Mark Kentell, Sports Development Officer for Mid Sussex District Council, said "The Council is delighted to support this important initiative, and welcomes the time and the commitment of all those involved."
