![]() How do I apply for a Downland home? How do I apply for a Downland home? [Top] You need to register with your local council who hold a list of those in need of housing. Downland does not take applications direct. The council will contact us when we have homes available. NB Chichester, Ashford and Basingstoke do take direct applications for some schemes. In Mid Sussex, Downland administer the Common Housing Register on behalf of the District Council. Is Downland the same as the council? [Top] No, Downland is an independent registered ‘Social Landlord’ that works closely with the council in order to house those in need. Does Downland have homes for older people? [Top] Yes, Downland manages a number of sheltered schemes across the south east. They are homes for older people who wish to l ive independently. For more details go to the section about Sheltered Housing. Do you have any homes to buy? [Top] Downland offers a Shared Ownership scheme for people who cannot afford to buy a suitable home in any other way. They must be in housing need and be unable to afford an outright purchase. You buy a share of a property and pay rent to a housing association on the remaining share that you do not own. In most cases you can buy further shares of the property until you own the whole property. (Some rural properties are restricted so that you can only ever own 80%). [Top] If a Common Housing Register exists in the local authority area in which you live, you should apply to the Local Authority then you can be considered for vacancies in all the participating Landlord’s properties and not just Downland.
